What potential movies can you look forward to watching in 3D in 2022 ? Not all the movies in this preview will release in 3-D but they probably have potential to look fantastic in 3D, or are the types of movies that usually get released in 3D. This 2022 movie preview will be updated throughout 2022 with new trailers and information as it comes in so please come back to this page frequently.

Some Caveats…

The various movie release dates below are subject to change at any time. Furthermore 3D releases may vary between the various regions around the world. Some movies may only release in 3D in locations outside of the United States and vice versa. Even if a specific movie does have a 3D version available your local theaters may decide to not have 3D screenings or to have very limited showings. The Covid-19 pandemic is ongoing and your local theaters may or may not be open or have limited hours. COVID-19 is the biggest wild card in 2022 and it may cause more delays or more limited region specific 3D releases. World events do impact movie release dates so the following release dates are subject to change at any time. Decisions on the 3D and 2D release of certain films may not be decided until days before its release. We are not 100% confident that all these movies below will be released in 3D. Since we are not 100% confident that every movie on this list will release in 3D we created a basic probability scale.

It is very disappointing that Moon Fall did not release in 3D. This is exactly the kind of movie that would benefit from 3D. Gravity proved that space movies can look fabulous in 3D.

Sony has a good track record of releasing its big name movies in 3D. Uncharted is a huge PlayStation video game franchise from Naughty Dog. Action movies like this have lots of potential to look wonderful in 3D. It is very sad that this video game inspired movie will not release in 3D. The third Uncharted game (Drake’s Deception) on Playstation 3 even released with a 3D option so it’s especially sad that this Uncharted movie won’t be released in 3D.

Is The Batman a 3D movie ? Rating - No.

3D Confidence Level - ❌ Not a 3D Movie

Lately WB has not been releasing its movies in 3D. We can currently buy tickets for The Batman and no theaters near us have it showing in 3D. We think the more adult comic book movies are less likely to be released in 3D. That would explain why The Sucidie Squad and Birds of Prey and The Joker movies did not release in 3D but the more general audience comic book movies like Aquaman and Wonder Woman got 3D Releases. We don’t know for sure but we hope that other upcoming DC comics movies releasing this year will get a 3D release.

Turning Red is the third Pixar animated movie (Soul & Luca are the other two movies) in a row to get a direct to Disney + release. This is sad because animated movies usually look fabulous in 3D. Maybe a 3D version of this movie exists but we won’t see it since Turning Red isn’t getting a theatrical release at all. Cross your fingers and wish upon a star for a possible 3D Blu-ray for Turning Red.

We expect that Morbius will get a 3D release in April, but it might be a limited release. Maybe Sony will change its mind. It’s a little strange that it’s currently not on reald website of upcoming movies that gives us some doubt that Morbius won’t release in 3D.

We understand why the first Sonic movie wasn’t a 3D movie. Paramount probably used the 3D conversion money to update the visual design of Sonic. This is the rumored reason why it never released in 3D, but we don’t know for sure. This is the kind of movie that would look great in 3D. So far we don’t have indications that this movie will release in 3D. The poster , movie trailer and realD website don’t mention a 3D release. Maybe we will lucky and Sonic the hedgehog 2 will get a last minute 3D release but it’s unlikely.

We don’t know if a potential 3D version of Bullet Train will be released everywhere or anywhere at all, but it seems like a 3D version exists. We have no reason to assume that IMDB is lying or reporting misinformation. We state this because 3D is not specifically mentioned in the official Bullet Train websites, nor in the trailer, nor on the RealD website. We shall see if Bullet Train gets a release in 3D, or if it will be 2D only.

About the Super Mario Bros. animated film

This Super Mario Bros. animated film, which will be produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo, is scheduled to be released during the 2022 holiday season. It will premiere on December 21, 2022, in North America. The release schedule for additional countries and regions will be announced at a future date. The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo, released worldwide by Universal Pictures.
